Hde 102 College Study Skills - Tues., Nov. 3

Quiz grade on Chapter 7: Read the case studies on page 199 (exercise 7.4). Respond to the question at the end of each case study by using specific strategies discussed in this chapter. Answer in complete paragraphs, 1-2 pages total. Type and double-space.

Due: Tuesday, November 10.

Chapter 8. Learning from College Textbooks

First, do the Profile on page 212 and self-score.

Then, address the following. Handwritten is fine.

1. List three ways active reading is different from recreational reading.
2. One of the strategies for active reading is "reading with a pencil in your hand" (Figure 8.1). Are you doing that with this text? Why or why not?
3. Why is reading out loud an important strategy for finding meaning in difficult text?
4. Explain the difference between "chunking up" information and "chunking down."
5. Try "drawing to improve comprehension" by doing the exercise on page A26. Highlight the main ideas and important details in each paragraph, then see if you can convert the information into pictures. Be ready to share in class.
6. Following the guidelines on page 217, write questions for each of the BLUE headings in the "Active Reading" section. Five questions total.
7. Reciting is an important step in careful reading. Describe how this is done.
8. Read the paragraph in Figure 8.5. Write a question at each level of Bloom's Taxonomy for a quiz on the information in the paragraph. Six questions total.
9. Using the provided excerpt from a textbook, draw a diagram for the Chronological Pattern on page 224.
10. Using the provided excerpt from a textbook, draw a diagram for the Process Pattern.
11. Using the excerpt on page 226, draw a diagram like the one on 225 for the Comparison/Contrast Pattern.
12. Using the provided excerpt from a textbook, draw a diagram for the Cause/Effect Pattern.

Be prepared to turn these in for points at the beginning of our next class.
